Last week marked a special week for KFund - as we celebrated our 2023 Investor Day - an opportunity to gather our LPs, portfolio founders, and friends from across the industry.

Investor day was the perfect time to celebrate the growth of Kfund over recent years with those close to us, alongside sharing what’s ahead for the firm.

We welcomed our guests at the Fundación Ortega-Marañón, an iconic space in Madrid that represents two of our main purposes as a venture capital firm: promoting research and innovation, seen in the work of Gregorio Marañón, within a broader context of social progress, as championed by José Ortega y Gasset.

During the day, we had the honour of welcoming external guest speakers from the likes of Creditas, Freepik, JobandTalent, and academia, supported by the insights of the Kfund team. Below we have shared the most interesting takeaways from these sessions:

Carina, Iñaki and Ignacio kicked off the day with a recap of the past 7 years and what’s ahead for the firm: a lot has changed since we launched in the summer of 2016, we’re now a team of more than 20 individuals spread around the world and we currently manage almost €500m of AUM across a wide variety of funds, with the expectation of doing more and better in the next few years.

In the morning, we put together a panel about new technologies featuring Nacho Puell, our Head of Research, alongside Marc Clemente and Jaime Novoa from our investment team, moderated by Ignacio Larrú.

The research department is very important for us at Kfund - being up to speed on relevant topics and new technologies - and Nacho's work has been key in spreading this knowledge throughout the team and in helping the investment team make better decisions. See our work on Quantum Computing, Climate Tech, and Generative AI most recently.

Later in the morning, we had the pleasure to learn about productivity and innovation from the lessons of José García Montalvo, economist, and professor at the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He spoke about the well-known productivity paradox, which refers to the paradoxical slowdown in productivity in the US and developed countries in the last 20 years - an era that witnessed considerable advancements in many technologies that would have been expected to drive corresponding jumps in per-capita output. For more on the topic, we recommend this HBR article, as well as this talk from Professor Tyler Cowen.

Closing out the morning we welcomed Sergio Furio, founder and CEO at Creditas and member of our Advisory board at Leadwind, who joined us to share his experience building international companies and scaling his fintech company into one of the most prominent financial services successes coming out of Latin America in recent years. We’ll get Sergio onto the podKast soon, so that he can talk in detail about the experience of running Creditas and building one of the most successful unicorns in the region..

In the afternoon we put together several sessions exclusive to our portfolio founders, around some of the topics that we think are top of mind at the moment in the tech sector:

  • Generative AI: we had the pleasure of interviewing Iván de Prado, head of AI at Freepik, who runs the company’s nascent AI strategy. Ivan was featured in our podKast in September 2022.
  • Financial excellence: Ana Sastre, CFO at Jobandtalent, provided our founders with valuable insights into the prime importance of proper financial management, bringing lessons from one of Spain’s largest unicorns
  • Building and scaling GTM playbooks: Arsenio Otero and Carlos Jimeno, COO, and Head of Strategy & Operations, respectively, at Celonis. Arsenio and Carlos talked about their experience running GTM teams at hyper-growth at Celonis. To learn more about the topic, we recommend this presentation by Arsenio himself at a recent SaaStr conference.
  • Case study: we did a private interview with Jacobo Vidal of Arengu.

Following a long day of talks, we welcomed our LPs, founders, and friends from the ecosystem for an evening cocktail in the gardens of the Fundación. This was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, share thoughts, and, above all, to enjoy what we do.

A special thanks to our sponsors Zenital, Google Cloud, Mendesaltaren, and minimum.run for making this possible, and to all those who were in attendance.
