Since our inception in 2016, Barcelona has been a key market for us at K Fund. To date and across our three funds, we’ve backed more than 20 companies in the city and, in one way or another, been highly involved in the ecosystem since the very beginning of K - in fact, some of our great portfolio companies (Abacum, Exoticca, Factorial) were born out of this marvellous region.
Our engagement with the city took an extra step a few years back when we set boots on the ground and hired our first full time team members in Barcelona. We believe that in order to have a close relationship with a market, the best way to approach it is not to travel back and forth every once in a while (although that definitely helps!), but to have people on the ground who establish and build bonds and lasting relationships with local stakeholders.
And as we continue to increase our presence in the city, we wanted to double down on this engagement. For that reason, we’re excited to announce that Josep Duran has joined our team and will be our main point of contact in Barcelona going forward.
We’ve known Josep through his work in Caixa and Aldea Ventures, but our common history with him started way back in 2015 while he was in Luxembourg. We first met at the inception of K - as he was one of the leaders of the investment of the European Investment Fund in K Fund 1 in 2016 - and the relationship we’ve built over seven years means he’s now considered a friend as well as a colleague.
